SPRUCE GROVE HELD BACK AGAIN!!

Last nights game was in a word FANTASTIC!!   This was the second time we met up with the Saints in the regular season and this one counted for points.  The last time we met up with Spruce Grove we SHOCKED them with a brutal 6-0 win.   This was a stunner for sure as this team was made up of the best 98 and 99 girls in the zone.

This time around we knew that they wanted some payback for that loss.  What team wouldn't?  That's part of competitive sport and any team that was beat badly in a previous meeting would want to win and show the oppponent a thing or two.

As fate would have it though last night this would not be the fact.  Our girls came to the game with a determination and desire to win after the last couple games. They showed our opponents that we mean business and ARE NOT a one time fluke with another crushing victory of 5-2!

So far this season Spruce Grove sits at the top of the pool and we are the ONLY team in the league as of this writing to beat this team.   I've said it before, our team is only a few months into U16 for the first time and we are showing the older teams a thing or two, being competitive and WINNING games.

It just goes to show that when our team brings their A game anything is possible.  This was also with 5 GIRLS out of the line up due to injuries and sickness.  WAY TO GO TEAM! Currently we are sitting in second place in the entire Tier 2/3 division.  An AWESOME achievement for the youngest team in the division.

Next up is the CMSA Winter Classic.  We are looking forward to playing some hard teams in this tournament to help bring our game to new levels of excellence.

STORM GAME LAST NIGHT - A Tie it is!

Last night we played against the STORM and some of our old teammates.  Games like these are usually pretty interesting but this game was just a normal game.  The girls were fired up to play as usual but as a team we probably played at about 70% of our best.

We had many girls that were tired from All Day Ski Trips and of course Jayden and Kaela were out due to concussions.   These facts affected our game and our forward lines were not the norm for sure.

Still even though we didn't show the best the game was tied 3-3.  The Storm tried really hard to win the game but in the end a TIE is a good turnout for everyone.   Next time should be different once we are back to full strength and our normal powerhouse play.

Good job to the girls for the tie.  Next week its Spruce Grove again!

2013 EMSA / MWSA Outstanding Volunteer Award

I'm very pleased to announce that I have been awarded the EMSA / MWSA Outstanding Volunteer Award this year.

The honour was awarded to me last night for the many areas of organization and media management improvement I've done with the MWSA and Selects FC over the past 2.5 years.

It also recognizes my role as the creator of the U8 MWSA Junior League Academy Soccer program. This academy program was a the first of its kind at the U8 age group in Edmonton. Each season helps to prepare youngsters for the start of competitive U10 soccer.

Thank you to everyone for awarding me this honour and for the continued support that the organization, parents and of course my team show me season after season.

Selects FC VS Selects FC - and the Selects Win!!

Tonight was our first game with the 1998 Selects FC team and what a game it was.  It was truly a sight to behold as both teams played an AMAZING game.  

This game was truly one of the harder games we have played since Provincials in August.  It was a hard hitting and fast paced game that all of us coaches, parents and players can very very proud of.

Over the past few weeks the girls game has been changing and improving where our team is truly becoming a play making style of team. This showed up in a big way tonight with some truly great soccer.

The working together certainly shows in our game statistics. We keep stats of each game and I want to share some of the progress we are having. For example, in the last three games our Shots / Shots on Goal average was 30-33 shots per game.   The Shots tonight were a staggering 53 against one of the top level teams in our pool!!   This is important because these shots were gained through moving the ball properly as a team and not just dump in the corners and chase it in. As we continue to work on our shot finishing we will only see this number stay high and goals per shots continue to increase throughout the season.

On the other side of the coin the other team only managed 21 shots against us.  Considering that this team has some of the best strikers in our league and older aggressive players this continues to show how far our defense and goal-tending has changed and grown.

Even though we lost the game 5-4 it was truly anyone's game.  Even the other team and many of the Selects FC coaches in the stands watching us agreed.   Many people commented on how it was one of the more entertaining and nail biting games they have seen in a long time.  We are so very proud of the girls and excited to where this team is headed.  In our books the score was irrelevant as our game play was the true winner tonight.

Great work girls!

Team Scary Movie Night

Last night was a our first seasonal team Scary Movie Night and it was a blast.  Nineteen of the girls showed up for some scary thrills, great snacks and good company.   This team understands the concept of soccer sisters; they word hard, support each other and love spending time together.


The girls got spooked out by Poltergeist and then had some great laughs from Evil Dead 2 and Vampires Suck.

Marianne will remember the night for a long time when she got scared out of her wits from a Barbie Hair Styling Head...... who knew that Barbie was so scary!!  LOL!   :)

Raiders Attack Held Back

Tonight we played our second game of the season against the Raiders.  The first time we saw them it was an aggressive game which we won 3-0.  Our game play last time was good last time but tonight the girls play making was truly exceptional.

We controlled the game hands down right from the whistle.  Defending was spot on, our forwards attack was killer with some SWEET goals including Kya's first goal on the team (and an awesome assist from Dori!).  Brit, Kaela and Jessica rounded out our goal scoring including a WICKED goal 15 seconds into the second half!  WOW!

Brynn's goal-tending was the best we have ever seen, she was truly a Net Ninja tonight and the star of the game.

The team almost got another shutout but the Raiders scored with 5 seconds left.   Our game is changing so much its exciting to see the progression.  Way to go girls on another excellent 5-1 win!

Another Awesome Win!

What a season it's shaping up to be so far.  Tonight we played the Xtreme team at the East Center.  It was a GREAT match and our girls really brought an ACES game tonight winning handily 5-1.  We stood our ground, made some awesome plays and scored some VERY sweet goals.

So far that makes our record 6-0 including the pre-season tournament.   Our team is getting better and better each and every week.  We are only a couple months into our first year in the U16 age group and we are rocking out the excellent games!

Good work to the girls and many thanks to the parents tonight for the super support!

Team Laser Tag Night

Tag you're Zapped!   This was the theme the boys felt when the girls team completely owned the 99 Selects FC Boys team in laser tag.   Boys team 5000 points......  Girls Team a WHOPPING 8000+ points!   Way to go girls!  (Ok that's all the rubbing in we will do in this post....  LOL)

This years Halloween party was at Laser Quest with the Selects FC 99 Boys team.  Both teams had a great time playing a couple fun games of laser tag.  Lots of laughs and lots of glowing hair spray in our teams hair!

After Laser Tag we went to a Haunted House in South Edmonton run by one of the boys parents place.  The girls got the proverbial "poop" scared out of them and everyone had a great time.

Canada VS North Korea Game

Tonight our team attended the Canada VS Korea soccer game at Commonwealth Stadium.   The Game was really great with fantastic weather for Oct 30th!!

I was really awesome to see so many players and parents at the game tonight.  Everyone had a great time cheering on the women's team to a 3-0 victory over Korea.  GO CANADA!

Update on Savannah

We have now heard from Savannah's Parents about her injury.  The report is no bone or other permanent damage that they can see right now.  This does not mean she is out of the woods just yet as she is VERY bruised and cannot walk properly right now.  Time will also tell if there is any soft tissue damage.

We are all praying for you Savannah. Get well soon!

First Regular Season Game VS SG Saints

Whenever we start a new season in a new age group we often wonder how we will do in the season.  This Indoor season has the EMSA Premier A and Premier B leagues combined in one league so that team get to play many other teams in a larger pool. As the younger Selects FC team in U16 Premier we are automatically put into the B pool and the older team into the A pool.

Of course as luck would have it the first team we get to play is the SG Saints in the A pool.  You may remember that this was the team we played in an early season exhibition game over a month ago.  Last month we were shaking off cobwebs and the other team really took the game to us.   This time around was a different story!

The game was simply beautiful.  Our team was firing on all cylinders tonight and man did it show!  It was also obvious that the work we have done in the past 4 weeks since meeting that team before has paid off in abundance.  We controlled almost every aspect of the game tonight and won handily with a stunning 6-0 victory!

Spruce Grove did not give up throughout the game and our many thanks for playing us with a quality and clean game.

We have always had a good relationship with Spruce Grove teams and we know it going to be a harder game next time we meet.  ;)


What tonight's result shows is that our team is CLEARLY competitive in the U16 age group and the win of this type is a testament to the hard work and dedication everyone on the team has towards the game we love.

As with any good game the pace is fast and furious.  Unfortunately during one of the drives on their net Savannah got hurt just above her shin pad and has be taken to hospital.  Once we have an update on her status we will let everyone know.

We are off to an excellent start to the season ladies, keep up the fantastic work!

Midnight Madness Game VS Ridgewood Titans

Today's game was the best by far for our team play.  It was a good game where our team decided to really turn on the co-operative and competitive play and it showed from start to finish.

The plays the girls are starting to put together, the creative game logic, co-operative play, aggression and everything else they need to win a game was firing on all cylinders.  Ridgewood gave the best fight they could but our team clearly dominated the entire game.

The Ridgewood goal keeper in that game did an excellent job against us and you have earned our respect.  Our girls threw everything except for the kitchen sink at this keeper.  Good job to you, keep up the good work.

The game ended with a solid 6-0 victory for us, Brynn's first shutout of the season and the gold medal! Ridgewood should be proud of the Silver they earned and we are very happy for Kristina and Sam who are now on that team.  We know that they will continue to improve with that team and by working with us on a regular basis.

Mill Woods Soccer has some pride today with this tournament as two MWSA teams from our zone took Gold and Silver in this tournament pool.

Good job to everyone on both teams. Let's all have a FANTASTIC regular season!

2013 MWSA Midnight Madness Gold Medalists

Midnight Madness Game VS Fort Sask

Today we played a Fort Saskatchewan Community League team in the tournament.  This team was a pretty good team and fought as best they could.  They know that going into this tournament that they would come up against some more experienced teams.  We won the game 5-1 easily.   It was another good game for our team to continue to the put our plays and strategy together in a game situation.

Thanks to the Fort Sask team for playing up in the tournament.  We know you will have a good season in your own league and good job  for trying something different.

Midnight Madness - Game VS SW Sting

Tonight we had our first tournament game starting at 11:15 PM.  The funny thing about a late night tournament in the indoor soccer center is that there are no windows so it doesn't feel a whole lot different than any other tournament. You can't tell that its dark outside until you leave the game.....  :)   I think we will have to attend the Camrose Late Night Classic in outdoor again this season to get a true feel for late games.

The game was interesting but successful in the end. In the first half we got off to a slow start and continued to improve throughout the game.  In true fashion for our team we worked hard throughout the game, got settled in and then literally wore out the competition. The Sting played the best they could but in the end we beat them 4-1.

It was a good start to the tournament and now we know what some of the competition in our regular league is going to look like this season.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS TOURNAMENT STARTS TOMORROW

We are very happy to be attending the first annual MWSA Midnight Madness Tournament this weekend.  This tournament promises to be a very fun event with our first game tomorrow night at 11:15 PM!!

GAME - SELECTS FC U16 VS SELECTS FC U18

Another game and wow what a difference a week of focused practice can make.  Last week we shook off the indoor cobwebs and tonight we turned up the heat!

The U18 Selects FC - Gilbertson team joined us in a full exhibition game on the turf.  What a game it was....  Right from the whistle our team came out of the gate running.  It was a very exciting game that saw lots of fast play, hard hits, great goals and fantastic sportmanship.   The game ended up in a 5-2 win for us against the U18 team but in my mind both teams were winners as the girls respected each other and showed excellent sportsmanship towards each other.

Great job to both teams and thank you U18 Girls.  We are looking forward to practicing with you throughout the season and getting to know you all better.   We also wish you the best season possible this year.

FIRST EXHIBITION GAME VS SPRUCE GROVE

We had our first game tonight and boy it was a doozy!   The second year U16 girls team came to Mill Woods and we had a fun filled game to help shake the cobwebs off.  As usual the first game of the season is always an eye opener and this game was no exception.

In the first half of the game SG really came out strong and this surprised the girls with the speed and aggression.  It was certainly time to get back into indoor form.  The second half of the game was another story however.  In true Selects fashion we battled back and actually out played the SG team in the second.

It really was a GREAT game for both teams and certainly what everyone needed to get back into form.

Many thanks to the Spruce Grove coaches and team.  As always we find that Spruce Grove teams are excellent competitors and good sports.  Thanks for hanging out with us today.

TEAM BOTTLE DRIVE

Today we had our first bottle drive for the season. As always the team did a fine job of working hard to raise some team funds.  It sure seemed like everyone had a great time during and after the drive when we went out for dinner.   It was really to see the team bond with new and old teammates.  You girls truly understand the meaning of what a soccer sister is.  You are a great group of truly classy girls!

Good job team!

TRY-OUTS ARE DONE

Wow.... What a tryout this season.  It was very stressful and very hard to make our choices this season.  So many new girls were on the field this season from all over and especially Beaumont FC.  Starting this season the Beaumont clubs are now becoming part of MWSA and this was in our minds a very good thing.

This season we picked up 4 new girls to the team, all of them from Beaumont.  This change in our team has in our opinion, made our team even stronger.

The choices were very hard and for those of you who did not make the team don't lose the faith. We are still going to work with you through the Red Shirt Trialist Program.

See you all soon at practice girls.  Good job on making the team, you really earned it!

PRE-TRYOUT PRACTICES

As always we have put on the pre-tryout practices.  Even though it has only been 10 days since we all saw each other at Outdoor provincials it certainly showed that the girls were glad to be back on the pitch.

We will continue to work with all the existing team and the new hopefuls.  Good luck to you all at tryouts.  Give it your best girls!

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

Hello again soccer fans to another exciting season of Selects FC Soccer.  This season promises to be a great one as we move up to the very competitive level of U16 Premier Soccer.
